A non-contact infrared thermometer (NCIT) can be used to measure a horse's temperature on the forehead, neck, shoulder, and lateral thoracic rib cage:

Forehead: Hold the thermometer on the midline of the forehead, about 5 cm above a horizontal line that connects the medial canthus of each eye.
Neck: Place the thermometer in the center of the right side of the neck, about 12 cm from the base of the neck for adult horses and about 6 cm for foals.'
Shoulder: Take a measurement on the horse's left shoulder.
Lateral thoracic rib cage: Take a measurement on the horse's lateral thoracic rib cage.

A non-contact infrared thermometer can be a safer and more practical alternative to a rectal thermometer, especially if your horse doesn't tolerate the rectal thermometer.

To be used successfully, an average temperature must be taken over multiple sites, and the non-contact infrared thermometer needs to be used properly (ie. the correct distance from the horse and perpendicular to the skin, as per the specific instructions provided with the unit you have purchased). Readings may be affected by the length of the horse’s coat, whether or not the horse has been rugged, the ambient temperature, and whether or not the horse is in direct sunlight. As a result, this method may not be quite as accurate as a rectal thermometer, but will give a reasonable guide within the +/- tolerances indicated in the specifications, and is useful in identifying hotspots due to injury, inflammation or infection.

The Mini RayTemp® infrared thermometer is a compact, lightweight and low cost infrared thermometer. Simply aim and pull the trigger to display the temperature of the item being measured.

The Mini RayTemp® measures temperature over the range of -50 to 330°C with an assured accuracy of ±2°C over the range of 0 to 330°C, outside of this range (-50 to 0°C) accuracy is ±4°C.

This infrared thermometer has a clear, easy to read, LCD display with low battery and backlight indication, and an auto power off facility that turns the instrument off after 10 seconds, maximising battery life. The Mini RayTemp® is ideal for numerous temperature measurement applications where contact with the item to be measured is an issue.

The Mini RayTemp® also incorporates laser assisted alignment as standard, to assist in pin-pointing the area of measurement. The unit incorporates a 12:1 optic ratio (target distance/diameter ratio) and a fixed emissivity of 0.95 making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
