Redlands Equilyte
Redlands Equilyte is a balanced mixture of essential salts required for the maintenance of electrolyte balance in the performance horse. Equilyte has been developed by leading veterinary equine specialists to cater to the climatic extremes that exist in many countries.
Redlands Equilyte...Acid or Alkaline? Equilyte is an alkaline salt. This is an aid to the balancing of body fluid acidosis which develops with exercise. All horses during training and racing lose essential body electrolytes through sweating. Redlands Equilyte is suitable for all conditions, except endurance exercise.
Why Horses Need an Alkaline Salt. When a horse exerts itself in training it builds up body acids. Too much acid, a condition called acidosis, can cause sluggish blood flow, tied-up syndrome and dehydration.
NEVER USE AN "AClD' SALT MIX (Except for horses engaged in endurance racing). No matter how hard you work your horse or how much it sweats, stick to Equilyte. Increase the daily dose rate but never feed an 'acid' salt mix. Acid salt mixtures can easily result in a faster onset of acidosis thus increase the problem.
How and When Do Electrolyte Losses Occur? There is a continual loss of electrolytes from the horses system due to normal body functions in the urine, faeces and sweat. These natural losses are greatly exaggerated by all degrees of work, heat, humidity, travelling, excessive sweating, low feed and fluid intake, periods of active growth, nervous tension and illnesses. eg scouring. Electrolyte losses are further complicated by associated fluid losses. The greater the stress that the horse is subjected to the greater the loss of electrolytes and body fluid.
Signs and Symptoms of Electrolyte Deficiencies. An early indication that a horse is suffering from electrolyte deficiency is a general lack of vitality. Other indications are cramping, dehydration, heat stress, nervousness, acidic urine and water retention. If not replaced on a strict daily basis with Redlands
Equilyte, electrolyte losses will cause an electrolyte imbalance which can produce a highly detrimental effect on body fluids, kidney, muscle cell function and other vital tissues. The result is premature fatigue, greatly reduced stamina, loss of appetite, dehydration, muscle cramps and fatigue, poor recovery
after strenuous exercise and poor performance.
Redlands Equilyte All Year Round. It is a general misconception that electrolytes are only required in hot
weather, in actual fact, electrolytes should be maintained all year round. Redlands Equilyte should be administered in winter in the same quantities as in summer. Naturally horses sweat more in summer so dose rates should be adjusted accordingly. Fluid consumption should also be observed daily, as with the onset of the colder weather, many performance animals suppress their normal thirst behavior which may result in inadequate fluid intake.
Sodium Bicarbonate Clinical tests show that, on average, doses as high as 50g in morning feed will only elevate sodium bicarbonate levels by less than 1 m/mole per litre. This is substantially below levels which racing authorities regard as so-called "milk shake" limits. Sodium bicarbonate is an important electrolyte for the horse, so use Redlands Equilyte with 'absolute confidence' that it will not contravene the rules of racing if fed as directed.
