Antioxidants - how do they work? - Intense exercise is metabolically demanding.The mitochondria in the working muscles generate enormous amounts of energy—and like a nuclear power station this produces waste products. Known as oxidants or free radicals, they cause collateral damage: reducing red cell suppleness, bloodflow and oxygen & lactate exchange; interfering with energy utilisation & causing muscle damage, soreness, fatigue & poor performance. Oxygen consumption & oxidative stress increase 30-fold during intense exercise—even more in hot, humid conditions.
